Building Requests Into Your DJ Workflow Without Getting Distracted
Checking a request dashboard too often can pull a DJ’s attention away from phrasing, transitions, and reading the room. The trick is to build small “request review” moments into your workflow at natural breaks between mixes.
Many DJs dedicate a tablet or side screen to the request queue, glancing over every few songs to star or decline options that fit upcoming directions. Some software can even tag accepted requests with key and BPM info, making it easier to slot them into a planned mix without abrupt tempo shifts.
Grouping requests into mini-sets—like three 2000s hip-hop picks followed by a run of current pop—lets you satisfy multiple guests while preserving flow. This approach turns the queue into inspiration for themed segments rather than random interruptions.
